Pacific Group Wealth Management / Christmas 2019

Merry Christmas! Happy New Year. Happy New Decade.

2019 will be a year to celebrate for investors, supported by central bank easing, lower interest rates, strong employment, increased consumer spending and corporate earnings that exceeded expectations. We have enjoyed the recent client account reviews as sharing above average returns is always a positive experience for our team. The growth in the markets has had direct relation to the growth of our team. Kiefer West, Associate Investment Advisor, joined us and has been busy transitioning his existing relationships from his past dealer. Kiefer has been a welcomed addition to our team. Carolyn Nnadiekwe, Client Service Manager, returned in September from maternity leave and it has allowed Mike Schmidt, Investment Advisor and Candice Hall, Associate Investment Advisor, to refocus on delivering our best possible client experience.

Our office has decided to transition to a paperless environment in 2020 and the biggest challenge in making the move has been me. I am a paper person, but I am embracing the move. Developing new habits and using apps that make us more efficient, we hope the change will be a positive experience going forward for our clients.

Branding will also evolve through 2020 as iA Securities will phase out the HollisWealth name. You will begin to see increased use of the iA Securities brand in both media ads, websites and monthly statements. I am proud to say I have been an investment advisor for 27 years and have never changed firms but I have lived through 6 head office name changes. My trade name PGWM – Pacific Group Wealth Management – will see increased prominence on our website and stationery.  iA Securities has been an excellent partner in taking over for the Bank of Nova Scotia and they remain focused on providing a strong national firm that is concentrated on providing the best independent investment dealer platform.

Things we will be watching closely in 2020:

  • US Presidential Election
  • Canada’s Minority Government
  • Global Trade
  • Central Bank Interest Rate Policy
  • Consumer Confidence
  • Tax Policy

I have said this in the past, I believe that our long term goals will be met and surpassed by owning an actively managed portfolio of dividend paying securities. The willingness to hold this portfolio through short term market volatility has proven time and again to be the best strategy. We look forward to meeting with you over the next month to review your financial plan, establish goals for the next decade and ensure you and your family have confidence in a happy and healthy future.

2019 was a year of inspiring legends. We had the opportunity to see and hear from some of the greats of our lifetime: Elton John, Cher, Paul McCartney, Barney Bentall, Oprah, Bill & Hillary Clinton, Jeremy Siegel and Michelle Obama. Similar to investing in slowly and steadily achieving great returns, becoming a legend is the culmination of consistent effort and passion.  Their legacies will only continue to grow. For me, to witness these stars of our time and hear their anecdotes between the songs and speeches, was profoundly inspiring and gave me a glimpse into their incredible minds and lives. Without exception, they all had to overcome their own challenges and continuously spend an incredible amount of energy to be who they are professionally and privately. In that way, they are shockingly just like any one of us.

Our sailing trip in Turkey was full of wonderful surprises as well. Every day exceeded our expectations from the beauty of the water, to the food and sites steeped in western and eastern civilization history. We were reminded that we are a tiny piece of the fabric of human evolution and that we are connected to one another regardless of the views and beliefs that we have grown up with in our little corner of the world.  It is why all of us at PGWM are so pleased to have played a part in something bigger and supported the Audain Art Gallery in Whistler, the Nanaimo participants Run for Cure, the CW Asia Fund’s 10th and last Taste the World fundraiser, Surfrider Foundation to clean the oceans around Vancouver Island and the Zero Ceiling charity to end youth homelessness.  Our goal as we head into 2020 is to live life with even more intention, moment by moment and plan meaningful  time with our family and friends. We are ever thankful to our clients and friends who enable us to enhance and make a positive impact in their lives through investments, life insurance, health and/or financial planning. We hope that 2020 brings us all an abundance of opportunities, good health, great laughs and even greater financial wealth!  Wishing you the Merriest of Christmases and the Happiest of New Year’s!

Mike and his family spent a lot it time camping and exploring the Island this summer. We didn’t think Kelly would ever agree to sleeping in a tent but it turns out she is quite the outdoorsman!  Highlights included trips to Hornby Island and Tofino. Recently Kelly ran in the Run For the Cure here in Nanaimo.  As a cancer survivor, this race holds a special place in her heart and having the boys cross the finish line with her was a special moment.  As always, Mike has been busy filling his free time by coaching the boys in different sports. There never seems to be an off season for that!

Kiefer and his wife Jessica have had an eventful year. Kiefer recently joined the PGWM team in Nanaimo and has been working hard to meet with clients and continue to provide them with outstanding financial planning. This transition included Kiefer completing his Conduct and Practices Handbook course as well as the 90 day new advisor training program. Kiefer looks forward to the new opportunities that PGWM brings for his clients.

This summer was very busy for both Kiefer and Jessica as they celebrated their friend’s wedding where Jessica was a bridesmaid and Kiefer was the Master of Ceremonies.  They also managed to fit in a North Island camping trip which included huddling under tarps to stay dry, whale watching, hiking, and a friends surprise engagement. The summer also included some family barbeques with their nephews, as well as Kiefer’s relatives from Germany! Kiefer and Jessica have recently ramped up their home search and hope to buy a home in Nanaimo in the coming months.

With winter and hockey season starting Kiefer has been spending many weekday nights and weekends at the rink officiating hockey.

Candice cannot believe the holiday season is here again! Her year saw some travel, visits with family, completion of financial courses and lots of tennis! Candice and her boyfriend, Graeme, spent a week in at Graeme’s family cottage in Muskoka (Cottage Country) Ontario in late July. It was a beautiful trip with lots of boating, tennis & pickleball, and food! Candice really picked up her tennis game this year, playing 3-4 days a week throughout the Spring & Summer. Although her serve and backhand have greatly improved, her forehand could still use some work! Candice also did more hiking this year, her favourite hike being the Maple Bay Trail outside of North Cowichan.

Just recently, Candice went to Las Vegas and Santa Monica. In Vegas she did a little gambling and toured the Flower One facilities. She then spent a few days in Santa Monica for a little R&R. For Christmas, Candice and Graeme will be in Toronto and Collingwood to spend time with Graeme’s family.

In January of this year Candice became an associate advisor at PGWM. Slowly, she hopes to move into this role full-time, but in the meantime continues to fully support Darren.  Candice wishes you all a happy holiday season!

Carolyn Nnadiekwe, Client Service Manager

Carolyn has joined us again in September after being on maternity leave for the last year. She is happy to be back in the office and is looking forward to catching up with our wonderful clients. She is excited to continue growing and expanding her knowledge in the world of finance.

Baby Kamsi is now a a year old and adjusting to daycare very well. He has just recently started walking and is exploring everything. He keeps both of his parents on their toes. His older sister Atarah absolutely loves having a younger brother and is such a great helper. Atarah is now in grade one and is learning lots of new things and making new friends. She is enjoying swimming lessons and celebrated her birthday last month with friends and a mermaid cake.

Marvin and Carolyn enjoyed a nice getaway to Victoria for a night and attended an event that celebrated their heritage. They have enjoyed this past summer by  spending time on the beaches of this beautiful island they call home.

Carolyn and her family are looking forward to a quiet Christmas with family and friends. They are wishing for all the things that make this season magical and look forward to what the New Year will bring.

Merry Christmas and Cheers to a Happy and Healthy 2020!

Warmest Regards, Darren, Mike, Candice, Kiefer and Carolyn
